Teaching

Lessons · workshops · student programs

Lecture slide: writing a new function, with the function name, parameters, rule and indentation labeled on the code, and its expected outputs.

Intro to Python Programming

Four days that took incoming Illinois Tech freshmen from saving a file and opening a terminal to writing their own Python functions and if/else logic.

Lecture slide: a full color palette built from one base color on the 12-color wheel, with its complementary, triad, split-complementary and analogous swatches.

Design Principles: PARC, Type & Color

Five lectures and a hands-on exercise that taught incoming Illinois Tech freshmen to design with intent: proximity, alignment, repetition and contrast, plus type and color fundamentals.

A breadboard with green, yellow and red LEDs all lit, a hand at the black potentiometer knob, two push buttons on the right and jumpers running to an Arduino.

Intro to Circuits & Arduino

Seven months of simulate-first circuit projects for the Exelon Summer Institute, so every incoming Illinois Tech freshman had a next build that matched their pace and interests.

Visual work

Laser cutting · 3D printing · vinyl · carving

A self-directed project to teach myself the vinyl cutter and how to build layered stickers. I sketched a jarrito at 2 × 2 inches and planned it in four colors (brown/tan, light blue, dark blue and white), separated each color into its own cut layer in the cutting software, assembled the full design digitally, then cut and layered the vinyl by hand into the finished sticker.

My introduction to laser cutting. I designed two cat earrings in Adobe Illustrator, a sitting cat and a hanging cat, then engraved the faces and cut the shapes on the laser cutter from 11.87″ × 11.75″ sheets of cherry, alder, walnut and Baltic birch. I assembled each pair with earring hooks, and the finished earrings were packaged and sold to raise money for the Makers Lab.

A second laser-cutting design for the Makers Lab fundraiser, made with the same process as the cat earrings but cut from pink acrylic instead of wood. I designed the butterflies in Adobe Illustrator, cut them on the laser cutter, and assembled them into earrings to sell for the fundraiser.
